Providence grant helps provide health care for uninsured

MEDFORD, ORE (01/05/09) –  Community Health Center received a $20,000 donation from Providence Medford Medical Center and Providence Medical Group last week to support the clinic’s work in providing comprehensive health care to uninsured and underinsured patients in Jackson County.  Providence Medical Group Chief Operating Officer Gregg Florentin presented the check to Community Health Center Executive Director Peg Crowley.

“This generous gift from Providence couldn’t have come at a better time,” says Crowley.  “Combined with other donations, we are now better able to provide primary health care for the increasing number of families requesting assistance during these very uncertain economic times.”  In particular, this money supports health care for children through the clinic’s Every Child Can Have a Medical Home program and women through the Every Woman Can Have a Medical Home program. Crowley noted that even before the onset of the recession, more than 35,000 Jackson County residents already lacked basic health insurance.  In 2007, Community Health Center provided primary health care services for more than 9,000 unduplicated patients of which 59 percent were uninsured.

It has long been the mission of Providence to help poor and vulnerable people.  “We have a tremendous respect for the services that Community Health Center provides to our community and share in the concern for those in need,” says Providence Chief Executive Tom Hanenburg.

The Mission of Community Health Center is to promote the health of low-income, working uninsured and other vulnerable children and adults.  Established in 1972 by a group of concerned community residents, the organization provides affordable primary and preventive health care services for patients of all ages through clinics located in Ashland, Medford and White City.
